Getting Started: How to Become a Spray Foam Insulation Contractor

The spray foam market was valued at $1.8 billion in 2020 and has continued to grow due to an increase in building, construction, and remodeling. If you’re looking to get a piece of the pie, a career as a spray foam insulation contractor might be for you.

We’ve been in the spray foam industry a long time, and we often get people wondering how to become a spray foam contractor and break into the industry. To get you started, we’ve compiled some insights and resources.

Pursue Official Education & Training

Most contractors start with a high school education. After that, you can take more specialized courses and training to position yourself as an expert.

Some community colleges and trade schools offer relevant programs. Consider taking technical courses in construction, building science, or a related field. If you plan to run your own spray foam insulation business, business-related courses such as project management, economics, and marketing will also serve you well.

Beyond traditional two- and four-year degree programs, many spray foam manufacturers and suppliers offer training on their specific products. At Oak Ridge Foam & Coating Systems, Inc., we provide hands-on training to highlight proper application techniques, equipment safety, and industry best practices.

Gain Hands-on Experience

In the spray foam and polyurea coatings industry, there’s no substitution for experience. Consider working under an experienced spray foam insulation contractor to gain on-the-job training.

Apprenticeships and entry-level positions (such as an assistant) will give you practical experience and insights into the day-to-day operations of running a spray foam business.

In addition to gaining industry knowledge and experience, you’ll also be able to determine if this industry is a good fit for you before investing too much time or money in your own equipment.

Build Other Important Skills

In addition to industry-specific knowledge, there are physical and mental attributes necessary for success in the spray foam insulation industry. Be sure you understand these skills and spend time honing them alongside your industry knowledge.

  • Physical Stamina: Spray foam insulation applicators often need to carry heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in tight spaces. Physical strength and stamina are essential.
  • Attention to Detail. An eye for details is crucial for accurate spray foam application. You’ll need to be precise and thorough with each project to ensure customer loyalty and satisfaction.
  • Problem-Solving Skills. Spray foam contractors need to be quick to adapt. The ability to identify and resolve issues that arise during installation (such as uneven surfaces or weather/temperature shifts) is invaluable.
  • Communication Skills. Effective communication with your clients, supervisors, and team members is a must to ensure quality work and on-time project completion.

Obtain Certifications & Memberships

While not 100% necessary*, professional certifications and memberships help to showcase your expertise, credibility, and commitment to quality.

The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) is a great place to start. The SPFA offers certifications at different levels that include both written and field exams. There’s also a number of member-only benefits and resources that can help you grow your spray foam business.

In addition to industry-specific certifications, you can also look for other opportunities to give your business an edge. Joining local business organizations and networking groups can help you build a name for yourself in the community you serve. You can also get certified in specific business tools and processes that support behind-the-scenes aspects of your business, like Google’s Skillshop for digital marketing.

*Some states and local areas do require a professional certification, so be sure to check with your state/local government officials.

Acquire Necessary Tools & Equipment

The right tools and equipment are a must when becoming a spray foam contractor or starting a spray foam insulation business.

Invest in a spray foam rig, which includes a proportioner, spray gun, hoses, and other high-quality equipment. You’ll also need safety gear, including respirators, gloves, and protective clothing.

At Oak Ridge, we build customized spray foam rigs and provide spray foam and equipment from top brands like Graco, 3M, Castair, and more. We specialize in working with new spray foam applicators and contractors as they launch their business and helping them find a set-up that works for their budget and business needs.

Licensing and insurance are key to protect both yourself, your employees, and your customers. Specific requirements can vary by your state or service area.

Start by visiting your state’s contractor licensing board website to research specific requirements for licensing in your area. You should also check with your local city or county government to understand any local requirements.

Key licensing and insurance requirements for spray foam insulation contractors may include:

  • Contractor’s License
  • Liability Insurance
  • Workers’ Compensation Insurance
  • Commercial Auto Insurance
  • Professional Liability Insurance
